There is, apparently, some bit of a problem on the acting horizons for two Canadian talents - Ellen Page and Michael Cera.

A report from The Star, the online version of the largest Canadian daily newspaper, explains why:

Ellen Page and Michael Cera, the Juno duo who until recently were our brightest new cinematic lights from sea to shining sea, and also all points south of the 49th Parallel.

Halifax's Page parlayed her precociously preggers title teen in Jason Reitman's hit film into a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars, a rare Canuck achievement. Brampton's Cera came to Juno already a star, having already lit up screens here and stateside in the super-popular movie Superbad and the cult TV fave Arrested Development.

It gives me no pleasure to report this, or to baldly state the obvious reason why Cera and Page are currently floundering: typecasting. They keep playing the same characters over and over, to diminishing returns. [ read more ]

While I agree with the observation about Cera on the issue of typecasting, I have to somewhat disagree on their observation regarding Ellen Page.

More after the jump!

Ellen Page being typecast? Not really...

Yeah, Whip It faltered at the box office, but there are some amazing films that cast Page, one of them is Inception, the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer from Christopher Nolan. I'm also very excited with the new film Peacock, where Page is part of the cast which also include Cillian Murphy, Susan Sarandon, Josh Lucas and Bill Pullman. These are two different movies, but have one thing in common: an amazing cast!

The Star was also critical of Page's more recent career choices:

Her lead character in Whip It is for once not a smart aleck. But she's way more talented than movies like this allow her to be, and she's been making bad choices. She dropped out of the lead role in Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, a gig that would have been infinitely better both for her and that movie. She'd have made for far more interesting demon bait than her replacement, Alison Lohman.

Aside from this article, there's one issue I noticed on Ellen Page- her name is not on the Jane Eyre IMDb page anymore. Reports Long Ago Captures:

Bronte and Austen movie adaptations are cyclical things. Every young actress seems to get her shot at playing Elizabeth Bennet, Emma Woodhouse, Jane Eyre, or Catherine Earnshaw. Five years later, they're now Mature Actresses, and watching the next crop come through the English classics. Right now, we're on the Brontes (spurred undoubtedly by Bella and Edward) and Ruby Films' adaptation of Jane Eyre spurred a lot of talk when it hooked Ellen Page as its poor and plain heroine. Variety reports that Page has officially dropped out of the project, but that it's landed Cary Fukunaga as its director. [ read more ]

Cera has Youth in Revolt and will play the lead character in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. However, I am not realy impressed with Cera ever since. [ Related article: 10 Most Overrated Young Actors ].
