That's from a profile written for the award-winning German actor Daniel Brühl where the actor himself pointed out why he always get to play the romantic, leading man and never the 'basterd asshole' villain.
But is Brühl limiting himself in European cinema? In playing only meaty lead roles? Apparently not. In fact, the German actor is just looking for the right role to play. After such acclaimed films as Goodbye Lenin!, The Edukators and Salvador, this is definitely one of Brühl's most challenging roles and I expect nothing but an spectacular performance! In Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, fans and ordinary moviegoers will definitely see a different Daniel Brühl as he plays a Nazi war hero. Kyle Buchanan @Movieline asked some interesting questions to Brühl, and my favorite part is when he was asked how Germans reacted to Tarantino's movie: It's such a relief, I can tell you, because we just had our premiere in Berlin. Not only was I nervous, but so was Quentin, because we didn't know what the reaction of the German audience and journalists would be like. I had a lot of friends and family members sitting in the theater and that's always the toughest premiere for me, at home, because you have the hardest critics. But the reaction was overwhelming - it was one of the warmest, most incredible premieres I've ever been to. I think there was one German journalist who wrote that this film is very important for Germany, because finally, after feeling this guilt [over the war], Germany and the Nazis get what they had deserved. During the same interview, Brühl hinted on the upcoming collaboration between Goodbye Lenin filmmaker Wolfgang Becker and himself entitled Me and Kaminski. The Nation's Pride Trailer, with the spotlight on the German actor:
Acclaim for Brühl: There is already a couple of good reviews for Brühl's performance in the latest tarantino film and here's one from Hitfix: Another international actor who should get some more U.S. attention after "Basterds" is Daniel Bruhl. Moviegoers may recognize him from his small role in "The Bourne Ultimatum," but it's his charming turn as Fredrick Zoller, a Nazi war hero who tries to seduce Soshanna Dreyfus (a fine Melanie Laurent) that should boost his profile in the English-making movie world. Bruhl is certainly no stranger to the industry after his breakthrough role in 2003's "Good Bye Lenin!" but "Basterds" shows he may be ready to make a bigger step outside of continental Europe. Brühl is young, handsome and manages to communicate a small-town boyishness that makes his character’s actions at once real and horrific. [ read more ]- - - What's on your mind?
