She is certainly this year's most fascinating actress - no wonder the acclaim and raves for her performance in An Education continues! The fact that Mulligan has a great sense of humour adds to the appeal. While it must be tiring to do all those interviews and public appearances, it seems Carey Mulligan has made it her goal to get familiar with the US movie scene and in the process, allow American moviegoers to get to know her better.

Of course, the media is all over her! A good and recent example is Vanity Fair's article, which tried very hard to be different and at the same time controversial:

Ever since it screened at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where it took home both the audience and cinematography awards, An Education has gone on to charm festival audiences worldwide. But even as it's generating Oscar buzz-especially for its young lead, Carey Mulligan, who's been hailed the new Audrey Hepburn-the film has also sparked a fair amount of ire along the way, with a few outraged theatergoers dismissing it as "that pedophile movie" for its depiction of the relationship... Here are just some of her responses to interviews - note how she can be quite 'disarming' and witty and generous at the same time:

I wish I could say "jackass" and make it sound as cool as an American. I say jackass as, like, [in her British accent] "jahkahs." It just doesn't have the punch. So I've fallen in love with, like, lingo, you know. And New York. I was here for six months last year, and I didn't want to leave then, and this time I don't want to leave. So I don't think I'm going home. I haven't told anyone in London yet. [ read more ]

Among her recent interviews, the one INDIEWire did was quite exceptional.

Says Mulligan when asked about the atmosphere during the shooting:

"It was a really happy set," Mulligan smiled. "Lone doesn't see making films as a stressful process. She doesn't come in in the morning thinking this is going to be really tough. She comes in and she's like ‘were making a film, how lucky we are.' She comes and sits in the makeup room and chats to the makeup artist, talking about getting free Christian Dior perfume. You know, she's a girl about it. But then she's also incredibly professional. She's in charge, there's no question who's running the show. But it's never heavy handed. She doesnt work on a punishment-reward scheme. You don't feel like when you do well she's nice to you and when you don't, she's horrible. She's just incredibly measured the whole time. There's no politics. She doesn't run the set through an ego. She just runs it through wanting to tell the story the best way possible. Which makes for a kind of calm place." [ read more ]

On playing the main character in the movie:

"When someone would ask what I was doing I'd say, ‘well, I'm doing this film, ‘An Education.'' I never said ‘I'm the lead.' Because I never felt like that. I always felt like I was doing this ensemble film that Nick Hornby wrote and I'm in it a lot. But it never dawned on me that I was in it pretty much all the time. Until I was just about to go to Sundance and I thought ‘oh, God, I'm in it all the time. What if it's terrible?' And then I was hugely scared." [ read more ]
